Joe Basel brings over 30 years of experience working on a diverse range of buildings, including commercial, residential, and institutional projects—from single-family homes to high-rise structures. A significant focus of his career has been the extensive rehabilitation and large-scale redevelopment of existing buildings in New York City, including 25 Water Street, the largest office-to-residential conversion in NYC. Since joining Gilsanz Murray Steficek in 1997, Joe has taken a keen interest in the adaptive reuse of historic buildings and large-scale fit-out projects. Notable projects include the 1.3M sf 550 Washington Street (formerly St. John’s Terminal warehouse), the 2.9M sf 111 Eighth Avenue (formerly Port Authority Inland Terminal #1), and the conversion of the Flatiron Building from office space to luxury residences.
Joe is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) and actively volunteers with the ACE Mentoring Program in New York City as both a board member and mentor. He holds both an MS and a BS in Structural Engineering from Manhattan College.
