The Guide Dog Foundation is expanding its campus in Smithtown with the addition of a new 31,950-square-foot Puppy Development Center. The facility will support the next generation of service dogs through purpose-built training, care and education spaces while incorporating sustainable systems, materials and operational practices.
The Guide Dog Foundation has provided guide dogs to individuals who are blind or visually impaired since World War II. In 2003, it launched America’s VetDogs to support veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities. Together, these organizations have placed nearly 950 assistance dogs.

The new facility brings together key program elements under one roof, including a visitor education lobby, a flexible multi-purpose room for training and events, dedicated puppy development “pods,” and a veterinary suite.
A defining feature of the building is its sloped steel roof, framed to accommodate skylights and bring natural light into the interior. Open, adaptable spaces are supported by a coordinated structural system allowing clear circulation and multi-use functionality throughout the facility.
Construction is set to begin this summer, and upon completion, the building will provide a durable, flexible environment that supports the organization’s mission while offering a modern setting for canine development, training, and community engagement.
