This project was a gut renovation that took the former National Biscuit factory warehouse, constructed in 1925, and transformed it into a Pre-K Center to accommodate 324 children. The Center contains 18 classrooms, two exercise rooms, and a 10,000 sf adjoining play yard. It is designed for a future renovation into an Early Childhood Center, and therefore includes a more extensive kitchen facility and other details to allow for this possible transformation in response to the future demographic needs.
The project includes a complete modernization of the original stucco-clad building. Punched windows and a new rainscreen transform the exterior appearance. Located adjacent to the elevated Long Island Railroad train tracks, the new façade provides acoustical mitigation to protect the hearing of all occupants.
