The steel has arrived!

GMS is providing structural engineering services for a brand new Convocation Center at Fairfield University in Connecticut, designed by Centerbrook Architects & Planners. The enclosed arena building will include an approximately 80,000 gsf arena with 3,600 – 3,750 seats and construction is underway. Needless to say, we are excited to see the structure start coming together!

Several key members of the project team (including GMS Partner, Gary Steficek; Associate Partner, John Hinchcliffe; and Associate Partner, Eugene Kim) visited the site in September, when the project received four W36 floor beams with shop-welded steel armatures and hinge-assemblies to support and affix the four corners of the curved-truss roof, as seen below. The steel comes from Beauce Atlas and Gilbane is working as the construction manager for the project. These armatures will subsequently be encased in specially-formed concrete buttresses; stay tuned as we continue to make progress!

The installation of these pivotal members is a very exciting milestone. We are thrilled to see the Center begin to come together. Be on the lookout for more updates from GMS as the Fairfield Convocation Center continues to take shape. We can’t wait to see it complete!
