Mr. Basel has worked on a wide variety of buildings including commercial, residential and institutional – from single family homes to high rise buildings throughout his career. A focus of his work has been the extensive rehabilitation and large-scale redevelopment of existing buildings in New York City including 10 East 53rd Street, 635 Sixth Avenue and 560 Broadway (100 Crosby Street). These intensive renovation projects include structural designs for column transfers, relocation of elevators and stairs, removal of floors, building additions and MEP upgrades. As a result, he is able to work closely with the building owner and the design / construction teams to develop efficient, creative and constructible structural solutions.

Many involve challenging structural modifications such as adding floors, transferring columns, seismic strengthening and opening floor plates.

In the congested urban fabric of the modern city, there is a constant need to coordinate with utilities, transit and city authorities to minimize any impact on the existing infrastructure. GMS constantly engages with industry organizations and governing agencies and is currently chairing the committee to revise the structural portions of the NYC Building Codes for both new and existing buildings.
