Now in its 22nd year, Canstruction is an international charity competition where 27 teams of architects, engineers, contractors and the students they mentor, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from cans of food. At the close of the competition all of the food from the New York City competition will be donated to City Harvest.

New York City is joined by over 100 cities across North America and other countries such as Australia and New Zealand who will hold Canstruction Competitions in the coming year. Highlighting the creativity and compassion of top architectural, engineering and construction firms, these astounding structures are helping to change the world – by lifting the spirits of those in need, by raising public awareness, and most importantly, by collecting millions of pounds of food for local food banks.

StaTUNA of Liberty stands as a beacon of hope for all those who are hungry and in need, and encompasses the AmeriCAN spirit of giving back. She is comprised of a melting pot of tuna that will work together to create a new beginning for many by relieving local hunger. This structure’s 1,848 cans will feed 481 New Yorkers

The TUNA Colossus
“Give me your Tongol, your Albacore,
Your huddled Skipjack yearning to feed the need(y),
The wretched schools of your teeming shore.
Send these, the Bluefin, tender-est tuna to me,
I lift my Yellowfin lamp beside the golden door!”

The StaTUNA of Liberty will be on display at 250 Vesey Street (Brookfield Place) until November 20, 2014.
