Fragmented Peace

Venice, IT

Displayed during the 2003 Biennale di Venezia, FRAGMENTED PEACE is a 2 ton, 2.2 meter tall by 2.2 meter wide (7.2 ft x 7.2 ft), internally illuminated sculpture in the shape of a Buddha. The sculpture is made from welded stainless steel and is filled with handmade Murano glass.

GMS worked with the artist and architect to proportion the exterior wire “gabion” and design the internal sub-structure, to which the gabion is tied. This offered a simple and effective way of minimizing the mesh thickness, while maintaining the exterior shape, and concealing the inner lighting and timer – an integral part of the artist’s concept.
