GMS IS HAVING AN AWARD WINNING YEAR!
At the 2005 ACEC New York Design Excellence Awards GMS wins big
twice:
Gilsanz Murray Steficek is proud to be the recipient of the 2005
ACEC New York Diamond Award in the Structural Systems category and a
Finalist in the ACEC National Competition for Structural Engineering
Design Excellence for 300 Madison Avenue, New York, NY. 300 Madison
Avenue is a 1.2 million-sq.-ft. office building on the southwest
corner of 42nd Street and Madison Avenue in New York City. The major
objectives of the design were keeping to a schedule and budget,
while delivering a serviceable and strong structure to address the
post 9/11 safety concerns of the tenant. Creative structural
solutions allowed the client and the contractor flexibility in
construction and cost. The atypical use of 65 ksi steel and the
deliberate design served to attain these objectives. 300 Madison
Avenue is an innovative and comprehensive design.
Gilsanz Murray Steficek is also proud to be the recipient of the
2005 ACEC New York Platinum Award in the Basic Research and Studies
Category for 2000’ Television Transmission Tower at the Liberty
Science Center. Architecturally elegant but also structurally
simple, the 2000’ Television Transmission Tower in Jersey City, NJ
has three tiers, with a 280 feet triangle shape footprint and will
be accessible to the public. The sculptural form changes appearance
as the viewer changes vantage points – thus engaging the viewer.
Recent events have raised awareness of design to unprecedented
levels. This tower will be an icon and could be considered a target.
The design has sufficient redundancy to withstand the loss of a leg
and thus prevent potential for progressive collapse. |

We
are proud to announce that Ramon Gilsanz has been awarded a
2001 Newsmaker Award by Engineering News Record - McGraw Hill
Construction Information Group, for his participation in
relationship with the World Trade Center Relief Effort. As stated by
ENR: "Hundreds of structural engineers were needed at Ground Zero
to find safe passage for rescue workers crawling over, under and
around unstable debris and through the teetering remains of the
World Trade Center. Rescuers needed "flash" engineering decisions to
assess the structural stability of damaged buildings and to provide
safe, secure routes for construction workers, vehicles and
equipment. Local structural engineer Ramon Gilsanz knew immediately
that the job was too big for one firm, or even four or five, to
handle. By September 13, his proposal to mobilize members of the
Structural Engineers Association of New York had been accepted by
the city and SEAoNY had begun its team rotation, which still
continues. More than 400 engineers have participated in the effort,
which the city has likened to having an engineering academy at its
disposal."
Recently, Ramon participated in the national ASCE-FEMA building
performance assessment team investigating the World Trade Center
attack. As part of the effort, he contributed to the book World
Trade Center Building Performance Study: Data Collection,
Preliminary Observations, and Recommendations, published by the
Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency.
