Three GMS staff members have been elected to various offices in the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, the Structural Engineers Association of New York, and Structure Magazine.

Jonathan Hernandez has joined the Board of Directors of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations. NCSEA advances the practice of structural engineering by representing and strengthening its Member Organizations, and is recognized as the leading advocate for the practice of structural engineering. He is a Partner at Gilsanz Murray Steficek. Jonathan joined GMS in 2000 after 18 years of working as a structural engineer in the Philippines. Jonathan is currently the lead engineer responsible for retrofit work at various Northwell Health (formerly North Shore LIJ) facilities and hundreds of new LEED certified PNC Bank branches located across the US. Other projects include the rehabilitation and infrastructure upgrade of the JP Morgan Chase headquarters, and luxury retail venues for several high-fashion brands. Jonathan has also served on the Board of Directors of the Structural Engineers Association of New York since 2012.

 

Eugene Kim has been elected Secretary of the Structural Engineers Association of New York. SEAoNY advances the art of structural engineering in New York by improving the flow of ideas and building the community of colleagues. The association sponsors workshops, panel discussions, lectures and seminars with the aim of addressing topics of interest and concern to structural engineers. SEAoNY also reaches out to other professionals, outside the engineering community, who work in related fields with common interests. Eugene is an Associate at Gilsanz Murray Steficek. His projects range from a new 45-story tower in Jersey City to a 14-story temple and community center in New York, and the Herb Alpert Educational Village, a non-profit college preparatory school in Santa Monica, CA. Eugene joined GMS right out of Columbia University in 2005 and when he is not busy engineering, he serves as the company’s team captain for CANstruction, an annual event to fight hunger.

 

Jessica Mandrick has been appointed to the Editorial Board of Structure Magazine. The magazine is published by NCSEA exclusively for the practicing structural engineer. Editorial content in Structure includes detailed discussions on unique structural solutions, project overviews, technical updates and in-depth code reviews… all designed to keep structural engineers informed and up to date. Jess is an Associate at Gilsanz Murray Steficek and holds dual degrees from Swarthmore College – in Engineering and Studio Art. She has been involved in the firm’s installation projects at the Guggenheim Museum as well as new construction and renovations.  Her recent projects include the new addition at Stapleton Library, theater renovations at the Baryshnikov Art Center, the Manhattan Cast Company theater, a 98,000 sf academic laboratory building at Southern Connecticut State University, as well as several private residences on Eastern Long Island.
