GMS is very excited to announce that we are now a continuing education provider in The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System.

Our first course, Understanding Resilience through a Musical Analogy can be presented in person by Ramon Gilsanz, author of the STRUCTURE magazine article upon which this presentation is based. The course is accredited for 1 Learning Unit of Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW)-related training (1LU/HSW).

This course offers an analogy to help explain seismic design and presents different construction techniques used in Chile, Japan, and the United States that counter an earthquake’s effects.

Learning Objective 1: Participants will breakdown how earthquake energy affects the ground and building which rest on the ground, and be able to explain the building’s behavior to Clients or laypeople.
Learning Objective 2: Participants will be able to predict how soil type will amplify or dampen earthquake energy and resolve these effects on a building’s structure.
Learning Objective 3: Improve understanding of structural engineering philosophies and principles.
Learning Objective 4: Improve understanding of the United States building code’s approach to resilience, damage, collapse and loss, as well as the societal impacts of the same.

Future classes are in development on topics such as structural design in a variety of materials (timber, exposed steel and concrete, glass, modular, etc), post-disaster reconnaissance, re-building for resiliency and more.
